Family Cruises - Large Ship or Small Ship??

I am taking my first cruise on a small ship with one of my grown kids and it has provoked me to think about the differences between the experience a family will come home with from each time. I have taken numerous large ship cruise vacations with my children at various stages and ages in their development. The pros of the large ship family cruise vacation are fairly easy to ascertain. The range of activities on board are such these days on the large ships that there is truly something for everyone, spa, youth programs led by certified youth counselors, dance clubs, diverse music clubs, karaoke, shopping, assorted restaurant types, and shows geared to please all family members. The destinations may be the only determining factor in whether a particular big ship itinerary is appropriate for a family cruise vacation. There are still many destinations that would a young person would find boring, while a teen or adult would truly appreciate, but a family can always be sure that once back on board there will be ageless fun to share.

The small ship family cruise vacation is an idea that must be reviewed much closer to make sure it will work for all family members. The small ship lines, even the deluxe lines that claim to provide for the children on board do not really have a program that will please most young children. There are no dedicated youth areas on the small ships, no dedicated activities, no entertainment geared to the enjoyment of young people. Children may be allowed on board, but they are not engaged during the cruise. So, parents with children of a young age group must consider closely just what will be included for their child on this type of trip on the ship they select for their cruise vacation.

An even smaller cruise type that might be a consideration by families is a river cruise vacation. This is a niche that is becoming more and more popular among experienced travelers and it is natural that it may be considered for a multi generational family cruise vacation choice. My caution would be to do due diligence in asking your agent exactly what provisions are made to entertain and engage young people on the river cruise that interests you. In the main this is a truly adult only travel niche. Multigenerational travel is definitely starting to catch on here, but the all of the generations involved will enjoy the experience more if they are all adults. The entertainment offered is largely provided by local groups brought on board at that particular days stop. The food while very good is not broad in selection.

Having said all of this I must say that the 12 Day River Cruise I am sharing with one of my grown sons on a river cruise tour in China will probably be one of the most memorable vacations either of us will ever have. It is a rarely and very special opportunity for both of us to share an adventure together that is unique to us. We are meeting interesting people from all over the world and learning about them in an intimate, comfortable setting. We will view the Terra Cotta Soldiers and walk the Great Wall of China together and that is very special indeed. I am so glad we decided to do this.
