Mexico - Is It Safe to Go There?
My boyfriend and I just returned from a fabulous week spent in the Cancun/Riviera Maya area
and I want to shout from the rooftop that it is safe to go there! All the press we are seeing in the
US is painting a picture that there is violence everywhere one goes in Mexico. That is absolutely not
true. Yes, there is a serious drug war going on in some pocketed areas in the country. None of those
areas, however, are in the resort areas we Americans like to visit like Cancun, the Riviera Maya, Puerto
Vallarta, Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas. It is so unfair to brand those areas with such a negative label The
people we encountered in our week there were warm, friendly and only interested in providing us a
great trip.
In every city in the US there is a bad section of town. In my home "town" of Los Angeles we have
sections of the city where it is a miracle if a young person reaches the age of 21 without experiencing
some major violence in their life, like the death of a family member or friend due to a violent crime or a
an attack by a gang member in their neighborhood. And within a short distance we have very upscale
neighborhoods like Beverly Hills where life is privileged and the tourists flock. And thank heaven.
For tourism is essential to our state economy. But what would it be like if the national news were
hammering on the stories about our inner city violence and the tourists stayed away.
Please, think about this when you hear stories about the violence in Mexico. Take the time to really
find out where the situations are occurring and don't lump the whole country into the same general
category.
Mexico is a great destination for a vacation and one of the best values out there. You will thank
yourself if you make an informed decision and not let the media decide where you should vacation or
not. I just got back and can hardly wait to start planning my return. It's that great a time!
